Honourable Lucius Banda: A tribute to Malawi’s “Soldier of the poor”

By Burnett Munthali

With heavy hearts, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) joins the nation of Malawi and the global music community in mourning the passing of Honourable Lucius Banda, fondly known as the “Soldier of the Poor.” His demise on June 30, 2024, while under medical care in South Africa, has cast a profound sense of sorrow not only across Malawi but throughout the world of music.

Honourable Banda’s legacy transcends mere musical talent; it epitomizes a deep-rooted commitment to social justice and equality. His lyrics resonated powerfully with the struggles and aspirations of marginalized and disadvantaged communities, making him a steadfast advocate for the people.

"As we come together to mourn Honourable Lucius Banda's passing, we recognize the immense impact he has had on our society," expressed His Excellency, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Former President of Malawi and President of the DPP, alongside Her Excellency Professor, Madam Gertrude Mutharika, Former First Lady. "His music was more than entertainment; it was a beacon of hope during tumultuous times, shedding light on the inequalities faced by many Malawians."

Honourable Banda’s music possessed a unifying power, bridging diverse backgrounds and political affiliations with its message of love, peace, and unity. Beyond his musical prowess, he was a dedicated activist who utilized his platform to effect positive societal change, paving the way for subsequent artists to use their music as a catalyst for social transformation.

“In celebrating Honourable Lucius Banda’s life and enduring legacy, we find solace in the knowledge that his music will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come,” remarked Shadric Namalomba MP, Presidential and Party Spokesperson for the DPP. “His songs will forever echo the aspirations of the marginalized, serving as a reminder of the ongoing quest for a more just and equitable society.”

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Honourable Banda’s family, friends, and countless fans during this time of profound loss,” added Namalomba. “May his soul find eternal peace, and may his music remain a steadfast beacon of hope for generations to come.”

As we honor the memory of Honourable Lucius Banda, the Democratic Progressive Party reaffirms its commitment to advancing the welfare and aspirations of all Malawians, guided by his exemplary life and unwavering dedication to social justice.
