LILONGWE (Maravipost): As the country’s fuel shortage corners amidst economic hiccups, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) condemned the government’s reliance on middlemen in fuel deals.
This comes at a time when Malawians are already grappling with an economy in crisis, inflation running rampant, and unemployment.
In a statement, the Chairperson for the Coalition, Gift Trapence, said the government has failed the nation failure to resolve the country’s disaster regardless of them know where to purchase fuel.
He said the government must clean up its procurement process and implement a transparent, efficient, and corruption-free system.
He adds that Malawians deserve a government that can lead differently, not suffering.
“Why is it that the government has chosen to persist with a system that does not work regardless of Chakwera’s assurance during Malawi’s railway cargo service that fuel shortage is a thing of the past,” said Trapence.
He further said the fuel shortage has exposed the government’s failure to manage the most basic needs of people.
HRDC, therefore, demands the stepping down of the minister of finance, Minister of energy, and other senior government officials that are aligned with fuel procurement of the country.
