Kenyan deputy president Rigathi Gachagua impeached amidst controversy

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a dramatic turn of events, Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been impeached by the country’s Senate after a two-day hearing. The hearing saw intense evidence presentations and cross-examinations, culminating in a critical vote that sealed Gachagua’s fate.

Gachagua, who is currently recovering at Karen Hospital, faced allegations of serious breaches of Articles 10, 27, 73, 75, and 129 of the Constitution.

The motion to impeach was introduced by Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse and garnered significant support, with 53 Senators voting in favor of the first charge. In contrast, only 13 Senators opposed the motion.

According to Kenya’s Constitution, the Deputy President may be removed from office on grounds of physical or mental incapacity, impeachment, or gross misconduct.

The impeachment process is governed by Article 150, which outlines the procedures for removal.

The impeachment proceedings against Gachagua have sparked intense debate and controversy in Kenya. Supporters of the Deputy President argue that the allegations against him are unfounded and politically motivated. On the other hand, opponents claim that Gachagua’s actions have compromised the integrity of the office and undermined the rule of law.

The Kenyan Senate’s decision to impeach Gachagua marks a significant development in the country’s political landscape. As the Deputy President faces the consequences of his actions, the nation remains divided on the implications of this move.

Background to the Impeachment

Gachagua’s impeachment is the latest chapter in a series of controversies surrounding his tenure. Critics have accused him of abusing his office and violating the Constitution, leading to widespread calls for his removal.

The impeachment process began with a motion introduced by MP Mwengi Mutuse, which outlined the allegations against Gachagua. The motion was subsequently debated and voted on by the Senate, resulting in the Deputy President’s impeachment.

Reactions to the Impeachment

Reactions to Gachagua’s impeachment have been mixed, with some Kenyans welcoming the move as a victory for accountability and others condemning it as a partisan witch hunt.

“This is a historic moment for Kenya,” said one Nairobi resident. “The impeachment of the Deputy President sends a strong message that leaders will be held accountable for their actions.”

However, others have expressed concerns about the implications of the impeachment. “This is a dark day for Kenya’s democracy,” said a Gachagua supporter. “The impeachment process was flawed and motivated by politics, not justice.”

What’s Next for Gachagua?

Following his impeachment, Gachagua faces an uncertain future. The Constitution stipulates that a person removed from office may not hold public office again.

However, it remains to be seen whether Gachagua will challenge the impeachment in court or seek alternative paths.

The impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua marks a significant turning point in the country’s history. The nation will be watching closely as the fallout from this decision unfolds.
