Lilongwe’s Chief Mazengera certified as Open defecation free area

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Traditional Authority (T.A) Mazengera is now among 15 chiefs being certified as open defecation free area.

The development comes following reduction of diarrhea, Cholera cases from 293 in 2020 to 189 in 2021 due to promotion of hygiene in the area.

With extension services from World Vision Malawi (WVM) and public health workers over 6800 households have quality toilets that defection in bushes has been reduced completely in TA Mazengera.

During certification ceremony this week at Chigodi ground in the area, Principal Secretary (administration) Bestone Chisamile lauded communities for adhering to health workers advises.

Chisamile observes that with reduction of Cholera cases in the area, government will save some resources which could be used to purchase drugs for the sick.

“Malawi government wants to have health secure nation by 2030. There is a need therefore to work together to achieve a health secured nation,” says Chisamile.

Charles Malonda, who spoke on World Vision Malawi’s National Director behalf expressed satisfied on how communities responded to call on open defecation free campaign.

Malonda hopes the campaign will go a long way to completely change peoples’ mindset on open defecation.

T.A Mazengera’s Chief council chairperson Kalekano Nefotoni said it was very difficult to change people’s minds on open defecation.

Nefotoni therefore lauded WVM for tirelessly effort for the health secured area.
