LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) expressed strong condemnation for alleged match-fixing malpractices within regional leagues, particularly in the central region.
FAM vice president Madalitso Kuyera, emphasized the gravity of the allegations, noting a concerning resurgence this year, specifically in the central region.
Kuyera expressed worries about the compromised professionalism in the sport due to such malpractices.
“The past four seasons were relatively free from these allegations, but this year, they have resurfaced in the central region. The integrity of the sport is compromised when champions do not truly reflect their deserving status.
“We’re concerned, and we plan to address this through a refresher course for all football administrators across regions,” stated Kuyera.
He revealed that FAM instructed the Central Region Football Association (CRFA) to organize the final match between Kawinga and Namitete Zitha, allowing players a much-needed rest after a prolonged season.
Regarding the ongoing match-fixing investigations involving Kawinga, Namitete Zitha, and Ngolowindo FC, Kuyera emphasized that FAM would intervene only if necessary, letting the league runners at CRFA handle the matter.
Speaking on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe during the 2023 Chipiku Stores Premier Division league final match between Kawinga and Namitete Zitha (which ended 4-1 in favor of Kawinga), Kuyera reiterated FAM’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the sport.
“We will only intervene if we see any missteps, but we trust CRFA to submit their findings and recommendations. Our role is to ensure fair play and uphold the principles of the sport,” added Kuyera.
Chipiku Stores’ regional manager, Dennis Kamnyamata, expressed optimism that the match-fixing allegations would be resolved amicably by CRFA and FAM, reassuring the sports fraternity in the central region of their continued sponsorship commitment.
Acting general secretary of the Central Region Football Association, Antonio Manda acknowledged the conclusion of the league but highlighted that the champion in the region was yet to be decided due to ongoing investigations into match-fixing allegations.
Kawinga football club secured the league with 53 points from 22 games, while Namitete Zitha finished with 47 points from the same number of games.
The outcome of the ongoing investigations will determine the final standing in the central region.
