LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Members of Parliament (MPs) have collectively called upon President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government to address hunger crisis which is currently affecting constituents across the country .
In an interview with Maravi Post on Nsanje Central Constituency legislator, Kafandikhale Mandevana said his constituency five ADMARC depots have no maize.
Mandevana disclosed that his constituents are depending on glasses and Nyika for food.
He therefore called upon government to start the distribution of floor in his area to rescue his people .
Echoing the same, Machinga East MP, Ester Jolobala also said her constituents are relaying on glass for food.
Jolobala added that the hunger crisis is causing deaths hence the need for government to act swiftly.
Adding the voice, Zomba Chingale legislator Lonnie Phiri said a number of children have fall from the trees in search of food, and “a certain man was chopped off his hand by a crocodile while he was looking for what to eat in the river”.
Nsanje North MP, Liana Tambala therefore called upon Chakwera Tonse government to revamp on Chinama irrigation scheme which was washed away by cyclone freddy as it is the only hope for his people as they used to cultivate using it.
Tambala said people in her area have nothing to feed on and she has asked government to implement the mega farms strategy to reduce hunger issues in her area.
Chairperson for parliamentary committee on Agriculture who is the member for Blantyre City south constituency, Sammer Suileman therefore asked Chakwera Tonse government to fairly distribute the food items relief in this time of hunger outcry.
Suileman said the distribution of maize floor which has arrived in the country should not be politicized to rescue alot of malawians who are dying of hunger.
While appearing before Parliament, Chakwera disputed claims that the country was saying the nation has enough food.
