LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) categorically refuted social media reports alleging that the commission has nullified newly demarcated electoral boundaries on the instruction of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa told The Maravi Post in an interview that the reports were baseless and false.
This comes as MEC demarcated boundaries of 229 constituencies and 509 wards are still valid and will be implemented in the 2025 general elections.
The electoral body has always assured the public that the boundary review process was conducted with meticulousness, transparency, and adherence to the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Malawi Electoral Commission Act.
The determination of electoral boundaries by the electoral commission was confirmed by the National Assembly on 18 November 2022, as required by the constitution.
Additionally, the electoral commission highlighted that the next review of boundaries is scheduled to take place in 2032, as mandated by the constitution.
