LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) categorically refuted social media reports alleging that the commission has nullified newly demarcated electoral boundaries on the instruction of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa told The Maravi Post in an interview that the reports were baseless and false.

This comes as MEC demarcated boundaries of 229 constituencies and 509 wards are still valid and will be implemented in the 2025 general elections.

The electoral body has always assured the public that the boundary review process was conducted with meticulousness, transparency, and adherence to the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Malawi Electoral Commission Act.

The determination of electoral boundaries by the electoral commission was confirmed by the National Assembly on 18 November 2022, as required by the constitution.

Additionally, the electoral commission highlighted that the next review of boundaries is scheduled to take place in 2032, as mandated by the constitution.

MEC emphasized the importance of verifying the authenticity of information before sharing it, to prevent the spread of misinformation and unnecessary panic.

The commission called upon all citizens to exercise caution and critically assess the credibility of social media reports.

The allegations regarding the nullification of electoral boundaries had raised concerns among the population. However, the swift response from MEC has alleviated fears and restored trust in the electoral process. The commission’s commitment to transparency and adherence to constitutional procedures reassures Malawians that the electoral boundaries for the upcoming general elections will remain as previously demarcated.

The boundary review process, carried out by MEC, involved significant efforts to ensure fairness, equal representation, and adherence to legal requirements.

The electoral commission considered the demographic changes, population density, and accessibility while demarcating the constituencies and wards.

This ensured a balanced distribution of electoral areas throughout the country.

By dispelling the rumors surrounding the IMF’s alleged involvement in the nullification of electoral boundaries, MEC has reinforced its independence and commitment to serving the interests of the Malawian people.

The press release emphasized that MEC solely determined the demarcated boundaries, and any external influence affecting the process was baseless speculation.

MEC’s prompt response to counter the false information circulating on social media platforms exemplifies its dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

The commission is fully aware of the potential impact that such misinformation can have on public trust and political stability.

The citizens of Malawi play a crucial role in preventing the spread of false information. MEC urged the public to fact-check before sharing news and rely on official sources for accurate information.

By becoming responsible consumers of news and fostering a culture of verification, Malawians can contribute to the preservation of the country’s electoral integrity.

As the 2025 general elections draw closer, the Malawi Electoral Commission remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.

Upholding the sanctity of electoral boundaries ensures equal representation and strengthens the democratic principles upon which the nation thrives.
