Police in Nsanje have arrested a 45-year-old man, John Gavi, on suspicion of smuggling six individuals to Mozambique for illegal mining work.
Nsanje Police spokesperson, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, confirmed the arrest, stating that Gavi, who hails from Nthukuso village under Traditional Authority Malemia in the district, intended to transport the individuals to work in unregulated mines across the border.
Sub Inspector Zalakoma identified the smuggled individuals as Jeremiah Njazi, Paul Binda, Shamo Watson, Isaac Ready, Elias Batista, and Evance Ackim, all from the area of Traditional Authority Lundu in Nsanje.
The police said the suspect would soon be brought before the court to answer charges related to human trafficking.
Authorities have since warned the public against engaging in illegal cross-border activities, emphasizing the dangers and legal consequences involved.
