The Great political upheaval within Chakwera’s MCP: A clash of Titans

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In the hallowed halls of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), a storm is brewing. Tension and dissent have erupted in the ranks following President Chakwera’s endorsement of the MCP presidential candidate for the upcoming election. But beneath this seemingly united front lies a seething undercurrent of discord and power struggles.

In a clandestine meeting uncovered by this intrepid reporter, it was revealed that not all members of the MCP are in agreement with Chakwera’s choice of presidential candidate.

Some senior party members whispered in hushed tones, casting doubt on the notion that Chakwera will automatically be the torchbearer for the MCP in the 2025 election.

“Reports of Catherine Gotani Hara and other senior MCP members stating that Lazarus Chakwera will be the presidential candidate for the MCP were merely opinions,” a source within the party disclosed under strict anonymity.

According to the source, the MCP constitution does not permit Chakwera to stand for re-election, as he has completed his two-term mandate.

Any attempt to do so would require a change in the party’s constitution.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Chakwera, despite his current position of power, has not always been a staunch supporter of the MCP.

As such, he will be treated like any other candidate during the party’s convention, with no special privileges or endorsements.

The source, who also serves as a minister, alleged that the MCP is looking to woo Nankhumwa to partner with the party in 2025 and potentially become a running mate to the chosen presidential candidate.

While the MCP constitution may bar Chakwera from running for a third term, the Malawi constitution does not impose such restrictions, leaving the door open for Chakwera to pursue the presidency through other means.

Meanwhile, a rift has emerged between Chakwera and his deputy, Chilima, with their respective political advisors and legal experts advising them to maintain a facade of cordiality in public.

Despite outward appearances, it is whispered in the shadows that the two leaders do not see eye to eye, with Chilima allegedly working under a mask of pretense.

The political climate within the MCP is fraught with tension and uncertainty. As the power struggle intensifies, it remains to be seen how the party will navigate the treacherous waters of internal discord and external pressure.

Will Chakwera be able to secure his position as the presidential candidate for the MCP in the face of opposition from within?

Can the rift between Chakwera and Chilima be mended, or will it deepen into irreconcilable differences?

As the political drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the future of the MCP hangs in the balance, with the clash of titans threatening to tear the party apart.

Only time will tell how this epic showdown will play out, and who will emerge victorious in the battle for supremacy within the Malawi Congress Party.
