LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a move that has stirred political discussions, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has decided that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) delegates will not be invited to its upcoming convention.
The announcement was made by UDF spokesperson, Yusuf Mwawa, who stated that the decision comes after extensive consultations with UDF members.
According to Mwawa, many UDF members expressed concern that it was inappropriate to invite MCP to the convention, given the challenges the UDF is currently facing—challenges they believe MCP has abandoned them to deal with alone.
The internal tensions within the party have been heightened by the resignation of Aisha Mambo Adams, who had earlier stepped down from her position as chairperson of the convention committee.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Adams has now returned to her role, ready to lead the preparations for the event.
The UDF convention is scheduled to take place next week, Wednesday and Thursday, at Comesa Hall in Blantyre.
This gathering is expected to shape the future direction of the party as it heads toward the 2025 elections, with party members keen to assert their independence and redefine their political alliances.
As the convention approaches, all eyes will be on the UDF and how this decision will impact both the party and its relationship with other political entities, particularly the MCP, which was previously a key partner in the Tonse Alliance.
This significant political shift highlights the evolving landscape of Malawian politics as parties recalibrate their strategies and alliances ahead of the 2025 general elections.
