Two Ascent Academy players attract Iceland top league side Breidablik’s attention

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Ascent Academy duo Hermas Masinja and Mwisho Mhango have attracted attention of the Iceland top side Breidablik FC as they secured a professional training opportunity.

As per the academy’s co-founder George Maguire, the two attracted the attention of Breidablik following their outstanding performance when Ascent won the Rey Cup in Iceland after defeating hosts Pottur by 1-0 margin in the finale last year.

The duel Masinja,17 and Mhango 16 arrived in Iceland on Wednesday to train with the Breidablik FC’s senior team,which are occupying second position in Iceland’s top division.

Maguire said “This is a huge step beyond youth football for both Masinja and Mhango. It’s a great opportunity to compete in a high-level professional football environment.

“The team has a reputation of developing young talent and has produced a number of world-class professionals,like former Everton and Tottenham Hot Spur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson”.

In their reaction, Mhango and Masinja said they will try their best to use the opportunity as a springboard to secure professional football deals in Europe.

The two were part of the Malawi Under-20 national team that won the Four Nations Tournament in March in the Capital, Lilongwe.

The two also featured in Malawi under-17 national team at the Cosafa Championship and Mhango was included in the tournament best-11 after scoring a goal and three assists.

The duo follow in the footsteps of other Ascent Academy products of Levison Munyenyembe under-18 and Precious Kapunda (Under-19) who are on contract at second-tier side UMF Afturelding.
